Greens welcome peak environmental body scorecard

The Australian Greens have welcomed the Australian Conservation Foundation's climate and environment policy scorecard showing the Greens are streets ahead of the Labor and Liberal Parties when it comes to caring for and restoring our environment and acting on climate change.

"The Greens will play a vital role in protecting and restoring our environment in the next parliament. With this election a referendum on our future, the Greens are needed more than ever," Greens environment spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

"Early voting has opened today, and voters have a clear choice. If you want to vote for climate action, and to protect our environment, vote Green. The Australian Conservation Foundation's Climate Election scorecard gives the Greens a score of 99/100 - leaps and bounds ahead of the Liberal and Labor parties

"It is unsurprising that ACF's policy analysis shows the Liberals cannot be trusted to take care of our environment. In the days before the election was called, Environment Minister Melissa Price signed off on both Adani and a new uranium mine.

"Our environment is at breaking point. Australians are crying out for action on climate change, a solution to our extinction crisis and to clean up the plastics in our oceans. They have been ignored by the Labor and Liberal Parties, but the Greens will act.

"We want a National Environmental Protection Authority, with real teeth, to enforce stronger environmental laws. We will introduce a climate trigger to ensure new fossil fuel projects are measured by their pollution, as well as the immediate impact on the environment and waterways. And, we will invest $2 billion a year to ensure we protect and restore nature.

"No matter who forms government after the election, the Greens in the Senate will hold them to account. Whether it is making sure Labor don't back away from their promises and demanding more of them or holding the Liberals to account and fighting further destruction of our environment.

"In an election where so many Australian's are prioritising climate and the environment, it is absurd that Greens leader, Richard Di Natale, is not in tonight's Leaders Debate. Australians want serious action on climate change, and the Greens are the only party offering a serious plan.

"Australians have a clear choice. If they want real action on climate change, the protection and restoration of our environment, and a plan to save our threatened species, they have to vote Green on May 18."

"The scorecard, released on Monday by the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF), rated the three parties on 50 key policies across four areas: ramping up renewables, phasing out coal, stopping Adani’s coal mine and protecting nature." ACF
