Media Release: Formation of Nambucca Macleay Greens

The Nambucca Macleay Greens will next meet on Sunday, November 27 at 10.30, in the CWA Rooms, Princess St, Macksville. New members are welcome.

Matt Parker, Convenor for the newly formed Nambucca Macleay Greens said:

“The Mid North Coast Greens Group has served the Greens of the Nambucca and Macleay valleys for many years.

“Over the last few years our local membership has dramatically grown as local residents realise the NSW and Australian Greens have much to offer. A new local Greens group will allow us to focus more on local issues, especially local government issues, pertinent to the Nambucca and Macleay Shires.

“It is time for us to form our own Greens group to meet solely in Nambucca Shire and Macleay Shire venues instead of in Bellingen Shire. We have been meeting in Macksville, which has become more accessible as new sections of the Pacific Freeway have opened. Greens have also met in Gladstone and Kempsey.

“This is an exciting time for the Greens as our membership has steadily increased, unlike the older parties. Recent successes in council elections in NSW and across Australia indicate electors have trusted the Greens to deliver cost effective services uninfluenced by corrupt donations from developers and big business.

“There are five unemployed workers for every job in Australia. The Nambucca and Kempsey communities have some of the lowest average household incomes in Australia. There is much to be done to create affordable housing and generate local green jobs by expanding renewable energy industries in the Nambucca and Macleay Shires.

Greens MP, Jeremy Buckingham, said:

I intend to become a member of this new group and to have more of a watching brief on the Nambucca and Kempsey Shires.

“A ‘climate emergency’ is now upon us and most Australians are concerned about the future of their children in a hotter world. We must swiftly close dirty coalmines, stop fracking gas fields that inevitably leak methane and move towards renewable energy.  The Greens will do more than talk about tackling climate change. They have a plan, ‘Renew Australia’ unlike some of the more vocal, local political candidates.

“The state of the Macleay River, already polluted by antimony and gold mining, requires constant monitoring. Mining projects cannot be allowed to unfairly impact on Nambucca and Macleay residents and the environment.

“I am excited to be part of this new and growing group of committed Greens.”
