It’s been a big week for our Great Barrier Reef. Let me tell you why.
First, we all read the deeply troubling reports that our Reef has again been affected by mass coral bleaching - its health is now described as “terminal”. At the same time, Prime Minister Turnbull arrived in India to meet with Gautam Adani, hoping to hand over your money to build the world’s biggest new coal mine.
We need a game changer. That’s why, today, we Greens have announced our new “Stop Adani” bill. Our plan, to be introduced when Parliament returns, will stop public funds being made available for dodgy companies and ensure no environmental permits can be provided to vandals like Adani.
While Turnbull attempts to lavish $1 billion of taxpayer funds on multinational miners, we need your help to spread our message about our plan to make sure they never set up shop in this country.
The Adani mine would be nothing short of an environmental disaster, and there are so many reasons to reject it - from the millions of tonnes of pollution the mine will spew out every year, to the coal that will be shipped directly through our Reef, to Adani’s awful environmental track record and the open investigation into its operations - but both the Labor and Liberal parties continue to support it.
Our plan is quite simple. Here is what it will mean:
- No public funds for dodgy companies. If you’re a rogue, tax-avoiding multinational company, too bad!
- No environmental permits for environmental vandals. If you’ve trashed the environment elsewhere, you don’t get to do the same here.
If the old parties don’t support our plan to stop Adani, we know people around Australia will kick them out and replace them with someone who will. Please SHARE our plan and help spread the word that we can Stop Adani.
Thanks for everything you do to support the Greens,
Richard Di Natale
Australian Greens Leader
