Greens Cowper candidate challenges old party
labelling.
Other parties and
candidates love to label the Greens as just an environmental party. It suits
their marketing strategy. The Greens policy platform is comprehensive,
including many social justice policies, all accessible on The Australian Greens
website.
Here is a tiny sample of our social justice
policy aims:
“The Australian Greens want:
• Adequate and secure allowance income for young people
to enable full participation in education and training opportunities.
• Effective
regulation of the conduct of the corporate sector including international
entities, to include:
- increased funding for regulatory agencies, adequate to enable enforcement;
- sanctions and fines that are sufficiently high to deter breaches of the law;
• Full
opportunity for people to participate in all aspects of life, including
education, training and employment, regardless of ability, taking account of
specific needs.
• Universal
access to drug, substance and alcohol treatment programs.
• A
treaty or treaties that recognises the continuing occupation and sovereignty of
First Nations peoples.
• A
nationally-coordinated response to Australia’s domestic violence crisis.
• Compliance
by Australian companies operating internationally with international human
rights, labour and environmental laws and standards.
• A
comprehensive food labelling system that is strongly enforced, mandates full
contents and nutritional disclosure, and allows only scientifically-verified
health and nutritional claims.
• A
national housing affordability plan.
• A
permanent migration program for refugees and migrants to Australia that
prioritises family reunion and humanitarian entrants, and facilitates migration
or resettlement to Australia within a reasonable time.
• A
criminal justice system that is human rights compliant and based on principles
of restorative justice and the rights of victims and the accused.
• A
guaranteed adequate income for all older people.
• Transport
infrastructure and services that are accessible to people with a disability or
impaired mobility.
• The
ongoing development of innovative and contemporary work creation opportunities
with matched job access and training opportunities.” Greens Policy
So when I hear, “The
Greens Party is just an ‘environment party’, I do become just a little
irritated.”
