Uncertainty surrounds US refugee deal: Australia needs to #BringThemHere

The announcement by Malcolm Turnbull that the US will consider accepting refugees from Nauru and Manus Island has done little to settle the issue of offshore detention.

It is an admission that Nauru and Manus are offshore dead-ends, and shows the pressure on the government is having an effect, but still leaves the future of asylum seekers and refugees up in the air.

Turnbull will not say how many people the US will accept. There is a serious question over the future of the thousands of single men, given the announced priority that will be given to women, children and families. And few will reach the US before Donald Trump becomes president on 20 January, when he is likely to scrap the deal.

It is not acceptable that Nauru or Manus stay open for another day, let alone any more months or years. It's time for the government to #BringThemHere. Read our full statement here
