Greens NSW News from MPs

Fly the rainbow flag for marriage equality

The Greens have been campaigning for marriage equality for more than a decade. Back at the start, ours were lonely voices in Australia's state and federal parliaments. Now the vast majority of Australians, and even the majority of parliamentarians are on our side. We don't need an expensive and acrimonious postal vote campaign, but if it has to happen, we Greens will be there campaigning as hard as ever. In preparation, make sure your enrolment details are up to date. If the postal plebiscite goes ahead, the deadline for enrolments is Thursday 24 August. You can also help encourage your friends to update their details by sharing these facebook squares.

Help out with local government elections

In many parts of the state, Greens groups are in full swing campaigning for local government elections. Election day is Saturday 9 September, and if you'd like to hand out voting information for early voters, your help will be very much appreciated.

Enrol to vote, check your address: do it now!

Jenny Leong, MP for Newtown

We know it’s frustrating. We know parliament should have - and could have - done this years ago. But you can make a difference and help achieve marriage equality by ensuring your enrolment is up to date, and talking to your friends and family about doing the same.

Fix overcrowding on Inner West transport

Jamie Parker, MP for Balmain

I have launched a campaign to fix peak hour overcrowding on the Inner West light rail line. Customer journeys have increased by nearly 150%, leading to dangerous overcrowding. Our community volunteers will be at light rail stations asking people to back our campaign demanding the Transport Minister take action.

Change the Date campaign is building

Dawn Walker MLC

January 26 is a painful reminder for Australia's First Nations People as the day when their lands were invaded and their ongoing dispossession began. I've been pressuring the NSW Government to support the movement to change the date of Australia Day to allow for inclusive celebration by all Australians.

Government shows heartless contempt for homeless people

Tamara Smith, MP for Ballina

Last week was National Homelessness Week. So what did the NSW Government do? It changed the law to increase police powers to move on homeless people in Martin Place. I spoke in parliament against this heartless legislation.

Unions vital in fight for penalty rates

Senator Lee Rhiannon

I’ve donated my $3,990 pay rise to the Retail and Fast Food Workers Union. They're doing fantastic work protecting penalty rates and fair conditions for some of the lowest paid workers. I invite you to come along to an event where we'll be discussing how The Greens can help support workers’ rights.

Grilling the minister over corruption and Darling River water theft

Jeremy Buckingham MLC

I spent much of the recent parliamentary week pressuring the water minister over the allegations of corruption and water theft from the Darling River that aired on 4 Corners. Reverend Fred Nile stood with the Liberals and Nationals in blocking all attempts to make the Government produce documents relating to the water theft.

Dying with dignity bill introduced

Mehreen Faruqi MLC

No one should have to suffer at the end of their life. As part of the NSW Parliamentary Working Group on Assisted Dying, I gave notice of the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2017. Debate in the Upper House is expected in September, so now is the time to start lobbying MPs.
