Xenophon, One Nation deal delivers blow to Channel 10

Channel 10's bright future under CBS is at risk thanks to Nick Xenophon and One Nation paving the way for the Murdochs to take the network over, following the passage of media reforms yesterday.

"To nobody's surprise, in less than 24 hours since Nick Xenophon and One Nation did a deal with the Government to abolish the 2/3 rule, and the Murdochs have made a fresh bid to take over Channel 10," Greens communications spokesperson Senator Hanson-Young said.

"The question on everybody's lips is, were they in on the plan, or are they just Murdoch patsies?

"The CBS acquisition of Channel 10 is an endorsement in Australian content and Australian journalism. This welcome development could see more jobs in journalism and content production, while ensuring more diversity in media ownership, and it is important that the sale has the full support of the Australian Government. We know Murdoch will slash jobs, close offices and run Channel 10 into the ground.

"If the Government was serious about media diversity, it would back this positive step forward for Ten and the future of Australian broadcasting."
