Court Decision on NSW Land Clearing Laws Reinforces the Laws are a Climate Catastrophe and have no Legal Basis

Greens NSW MP and Environment Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC has reacted to news that the Land and Environment Court today ruled the NSW Government’s land-clearing laws invalid.

Dr. Faruqi said:

“These laws were rushed, had no regard for the impact on the environment and threatened species and were pushed through to benefit big business and now we know they have no legal standing either.


“If the Berejiklian Government has any integrity they would tear up these laws permanently and commit to restoring and strengthening native vegetation protections.

“The only word to describe how wicked these laws are is ecocidal. They are a climate catastrophe, allow the clearing of literally 99% of koala habitat and will see more and more threatened species pushed to the brink.

“The NSW Government knew full well the disastrous effect of these environmentally destructive laws but continues to arrogantly support  big mining, huge agribusinesses and big property developers rather than stand up for the community and the environment.

“This court decision is a huge win for the environment and reinforces what we have saying since day 1 - these are bad laws with no legal basis,” she concluded.
