"While the Liberal Government is grovelling to the Catholic sector, there are public school students going without the basics of a decent education," Greens education spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
"Australian parents of public school children would be appalled by the capitulating to the Catholic school sector by both the Labor and Liberal parties. The majority of Aussie kids go to public schools, it is unfair and illogical to prioritise Catholic and private schools over public.
"Taxpayer money for schools must be distributed on the basis of need, not on the basis of who runs the biggest political scare campaigns. Rich Catholic schools shouldn't get more money just because they make political threats at election time. All our kids deserve better.
"It is the Catholic sector, not the Government, that decides which schools to keep poor and which schools to prop up. They have full control over how the public funds they receive are spent, and need to take responsibility for schools in their sector going without.
"While the Government decides whether to throw nearly $2 billion more to Catholic schools, public schools remain nearly $2 billion underneath their SRS this year and next.
"Education funding should be about getting great outcomes for our kids, so they have the best chance at succeeding in their schooling regardless of where they live or what their parents' bank balance is.
"The Greens are unashamedly in favour of public schools, and believe the public sector should be the priority. By offering billions of dollars more to the Catholic sector, the Government is throwing any hope of needs-based funding out the window."
