“Cleaning up our oceans must be a priority for this Government. We owe it to the marine life choking on our waste problem. We owe it to the next generation who should not be burdened with cleaning up the waste left by those who have come before them,” Greens environment spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
“The Government owes it to the Australian people and our environment to commit to cleaning up our oceans and waterways this World Oceans Day. We are contributing to a waste crisis in our region and countries like China and Malaysia are now refusing to be dumping grounds for Australia’s rubbish.
“The community is already playing its part, with huge numbers of people moving away from single-use plastics. But it’s time the Morrison Government did their share of the heavy lifting.
“The Greens will introduce legislation to ban microbeads and light plastics by 2021, and single-use plastics by 2025. Australia is known for its beautiful coastline, we should be striving to make sure it, and our waterways, are cleaned up.
"It is 10 years since South Australia banned single-use plastic shopping bags. Our progress on reducing plastic waste in Australia has stalled, while nations and jurisdictions around the world are leaving us behind."
