Saving threatened species needs real funding: Greens

The Morrison Government can no longer ignore the extinction crisis highlighted on the ABC’s Four Corners. They must commit to funding a comprehensive recovery approach,  the Greens say.

“The Morrison-McCormack Government may have ignored the harrowing UN report into the global biodiversity crisis, but they cannot look away from tonight’s Four Corner’s program. It shines a light on Australia’s failure to plan for a wipe-out of our threatened species. We must act,” Greens environment spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

“New Environment Minister Sussan Ley can take strides toward a better future by committing the $200 million a year needed to fund threatened species recovery. Picking and choosing a few token projects, and crowdfunding our habitat and species recovery, is not going to solve a problem that is crying out for real investment.

“The Government must listen to the experts. We are at a tipping point in protecting the environment and our biodiversity, they cannot put their heads in the sand. Australia can only be part of a global solution to the extinction crisis if we look after our own threatened species and habitats.

“There is another way off the endangered list that doesn’t result in extinction. We need our Environment Minister to be ambitious, stand up to the environment wreckers in her party, and make saving our threatened species a priority.

“Our wildlife and wild places are synonymous with life in Australia. We love our great outdoors, and we must restore and protect what we have left before it is too late.”
