Greens climate change and energy spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today said that an urgent shift to electricity powered by renewables, not gas, is what’s required to solve Australia’s energy crisis.
“A gas summit talk-fest in Canberra won’t magically create a solution to our energy crisis because gas won’t generate the clean, cheap & reliable electricity that industry needs,” said Mr. Bandt.
“As the Climate Council has pointed out, creating electricity from gas is expensive and some gas plants are as polluting as coal-fired power stations.
“If the aim is to bring electricity prices down, gas is a false messiah.
“Those companies that inherently require gas in their production only have Labor and Liberal to blame for skyrocketing prices.
“Because of the old parties’ craven approach to the big gas cartel, Australia sends its gas offshore, gets a pittance back into the public purse and imposes high prices for business.
“The government needs to take on Big Gas at the same time as creating plentiful, cheap and clean renewable electricity for business.”
