Dr Faruqi said:
“I look forward to supporting the Coffs Coast Community against Domestic and Family Violence who are rightly saying “Enough is enough” to domestic violence.
“Domestic and Family Violence are the most serious social and justice issues of our time. The whole community must come together and focus on an integrated, coordinated and collaborative approach to tackle the cycle of violence to eliminate the root causes.
“In NSW, three-quarters of all women killed die at the hands of someone they know. Around two in five of all assaults are domestic violence related, about 370 instances of domestic and family violence a day are dealt with by police but only half are reported.
“We are particularly failing regional women. Nineteen of the top 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) with the highest rate of domestic assaults are regional areas which are already suffering from a lack of services. Governments must also ensure that women who face a higher risk of violence including Aboriginal women, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) women and women with a disability have access to tailored support and services,” she concluded.
