Close The Camps: Adam Bandt

Will you be at the
Saturday MAY11
11:00

"All of us, including people who are fleeing persecution or war-torn countries, have a right to live free from danger, to be treated with dignity and compassion and to be given help when we need it.

Australians are compassionate and fair. Looking out for others is at the very core of who we are.

Close The Camps

But our values are being betrayed by both the major parties, who, in an attempt to win your vote, have spent years locking up women, men and children in indefinite detention,
separating families who have turned to Australia for help.

Labor created offshore indefinite detention and the Liberals doubled-down on it. Both the Labor Party and the Liberals support the detention of people in deliberately cruel and torturous conditions. They support turning around boats at sea and returning people to face persecution. People have died, been assaulted and endured psychological torment because of the choices of the old parties. Labor and the

Liberals (and Nationals) have refused to act with basic humanity and compassion and people who need our help are suffering.

The Greens are the only party to have always stood against indefinite offshore detention.

You can read about our plan in detail here.

If you haven’t already, please support our plan to close the camps and please add your name to our campaign here.

The Manus Island and Nauru detention centres must be closed, and every single man, woman and child detained there should be brought to Australia.

With Bill Shorten on track to become Australia’s next Prime Minister, now is our chance to send a strong message that Australians want to see the Labor Party adopt a more compassionate approach to refugees and commit to closing the camps.

If we could close Manus and Nauru and bring these people here, we would. We need to kick out the conservatives, but we also need Labor to change. The next two weeks is our chance to show Labor that there’s only one decision they can make - ending offshore detention.

Our plan will create a system that fairly and quickly helps people find safety, rebuild their lives with dignity and doesn’t punish them for seeking our help.

Rally for asylum seekers and refugees May 11

Justice for Refugees Rally

Who: Bellingen and Nambucca District  Rural Australians for Refugees (RAR)

What: Rally for asylum seekers and refugees

Where: The Jetty Foreshores

When: 11.00 to 12.30 pm, Saturday 11 May

Contact: Mike Griffin Ph: 6569 5419

About

“Our local group – Bellingen and Nambucca District  Rural Australians for Refugees – has been campaigning for five years to bring an end to our brutal treatment of asylum seekers and refugees on Nauru and Manus Island.

“The 930 adults who continue to languish in these two hell-holes are held in indefinite detention, with no prospect of resettling in Australia.  Twelve of them have died whilst in the “care” of the Australian government. Many of them have self-harmed, and most of them have significant health issues as a direct result of the government’s cruel and inhumane policy; a policy which is deliberately designed to break their spirits. And it has!

“Most candidates seem to be ignoring this issue. The older parties seem to have no plans for an early end to this imprisonment. Imagine the feelings of hopelessness these legal refugees experience as they suffer in these camps with no end in sight to their incarceration.

“We hope we are joined on Saturday by Australians wanting to send a clear message to voters and candidates in the federal election that this cruel, heartless, hugely expensive and utterly unnecessary policy must  be brought to an end. We Australians are better than this. It is surely time to show some compassion.”

Mike Griffin, RAR

Greens call for an immediate halt to logging core koala habitat in Coffs Harbour region

Coffs Harbour Greens spokesperson, Councillor Sally Townley and NSW Greens MP, Dawn Walker have called for an immediate halt to logging in core koala habitat in State Forests in the Coffs Harbour region.

“There is compelling evidence that NSW Forest Corporation is not following its own guidelines and has targeted high quality koala habitat by increasing logging intensity since 2010. The area from Coffs Harbour to Kempsey contains the most significant koala colonies in Eastern Australia and almost half of the suitable habitat is located in State Forests. It is in this area that we have the best chance of conserving koalas, in the long term, if we protect their remaining habitat now” said Councillor Townley.
