Reckless PM opens the door to nuclear power

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has foolishly opened the door to overturning the ban on nuclear power, which could have dangerous repercussions, the Greens say.
“The Prime Minister’s  flippancy around nuclear power has opened the door to the Mining Lobby’s dangerous campaign to overturn Australia’s ban on the dangerous technology.  Australians overwhelmingly oppose nuclear power and so should the Prime Minister,” Greens nuclear spokesperson Sarah Hanson-Young said.

“The Prime Minister’s comments on nuclear power have sent a dangerous signal to the mining industry. He must reaffirm Australia’s commitment to a ban on nuclear power.

“The mining lobby is rich, powerful, and we know has great influence over the Liberal Government. It has already suggested the ban on nuclear power should be overturned when arguing for weaker environment laws. The Prime Minister has paved the way for a pro-nuclear campaign.

“This foolish move from the Prime Minister comes as the Morrison Government wants to build a nuclear waste dump in the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. Australia is struggling to deal with low and intermediate level nuclear waste as it is. Entertaining nuclear power just goes to show how out of touch the Liberals are.

“Nuclear Power has a waste legacy that has never been solved, is water intensive, take years to build and cost billions. Now is the time to embrace the age of renewables, not go backwards down this dangerous and unaffordable path.

“The Greens are committed to blocking any moves to overturn the ban on nuclear power in Australia.”
