People Before Pokies: Revealing the true cost to our local communities

Did you see the story in today's Sydney Morning Herald revealing the NSW community lost a staggering $5.4 billion last year on poker machines in local clubs?

The Greens uncovered the clubs' big dirty secret by purchasing Government data showing exactly how much money is gambled and lost on the pokies in clubs across the state.

Do you want to know how much money pokies in clubs are ripping out of your local community?

The data shows the devastating cost to individuals, families and local communities, and the greatest impact is on those communities that can least afford it.

We had to buy the information and release it to the public because the NSW Government refuses to make it available free and online. But even more data is kept secret in NSW, including the venue-by-venue statistics.

That’s why The Greens have put People before Pokies by releasing this data today.

We are also calling on the NSW Government to make all information about poker machine losses accessible for free, so communities are armed with the knowledge to challenge the massive impacts of poker machine gambling in this state

If the Government fails to do so, I’m committing to regularly purchase this data and make it accessible to everyone, in order to better inform the public debate. I’ll also be bringing legislation to Parliament to clean up the industry and make it transparent and accountable.

What today's headlines don't show you is the extent to which peoples' lives are ruined by the addictive poker machines in our local clubs, pubs and hotels. Every time the pokies win, we all lose.

But together, we can stand up to the vested interests of the poker machine industry and put people before pokies.

I hope you will join me,

Justin Field
NSW Greens MP
