New figures reveal private arsenals of guns in Nambucca Macleay Districts

Adler Shotgun
New figures obtained by The Greens show there are a growing number of guns in the greater Kempsey district, with some locals amassing private arsenals that could pose a danger to the public.

The data shows there are 1279 registered firearms owners in the postcode area 2440 alone, who own a total of 5644 guns.

The average number of guns per owner is 4.4, with one individual owning as many as 87 guns. Even when this large number is taken from the total the average still tops 4.3.

Greens express disappointment in Nambucca Shire Council's failure to support Great Koala National Park

NSW Greens MP, Dawn Walker has expressed her disappointment in Nambucca Shire Council's decision not to formally support the Great Koala National Park at its meeting last week.

"The Great Koala National Park is an exciting plan that would generate employment opportunities across the Mid North Coast.

"It's a real shame that despite a very close vote, Nambucca Shire Council has seemingly succumbed to the fear campaign being run by the logging industry who have used inflated jobs figures to argue against the Great Koala National Park plan.

"The reality is, the Great Koala National Park would be a major employment generator for the Mid North Coast, creating hundreds of new jobs for locals in the tourism, hospitality, accommodation and retail sectors, while protecting one of the most important koala populations in NSW.

Greens NSW MP Visits Coffs Harbour for White Ribbon Day and to Discuss Forestry

Mehreen Faruqi, Greens MP, visited the Coffs Coast on November 25 to speak at a White Ribbon Event. Mehreen Faruqi's responsibilities as a Greens NSW spokesperson include The Environment and Status of Women. She also took the opportunity to discuss various local issues with residents at a meeting in Bellingen.

Dr Faruqi said:

‘The controversial harvesting practices of the NSW Forestry Corporation are certainly a local issue. Nearby forest neighbours are exposed to smoke pollution from the practice of burning off forest remnants after clear-felling practices. The toxic effects of smoke pollution are well known. The affected residences were present long before the so called ‘plantations’ were established.

‘The Bellingen Valley is surrounded by state forests, vital carbon sink reserves and a wonderful if underutilised recreation resource for the community. Current moves to harvest timber for the creation of wood pellets designed for export are a huge concern. Few jobs will result, the soils will suffer and other climate emergency carbon reduction measures will be negated. Constantly logged forests are drier forests and as average temperatures increase the last thing we need surrounding towns like Woolgoolga, Bowraville, Macksville and Bellingen are forests with reduced water storage capacity and ready to ignite.

‘I note that Bellingen Shire Council has carried a motion to require development consent for the establishment of blueberry farms in some zones unless the farms comply with certain criteria designed to protect water courses, and therefore residents, from chemical pollution. I applaud the council’s decision and regret that other Coffs Coast Councils haven’t implemented similar sensible precautions, especially after we have seen some recent evidence of poor chemical management practice on local blueberry farms.

“We need a Great Koala National Park in the region to protect local forests from logging and help ensure the survival of one of NSW's most important koala populations” she concluded.

Greens call for urgent suspension of logging operations in prime koala habitat in Buckra Bendinni State Forest

Greens Forests spokesperson, Dawn Walker, has called for an urgent suspension of logging operations in Buckra Bendinni State Forest, near Nambucca Heads, due to concerns about impacts on the koala population.

“Buckra Bendinni State Forest in the Nambucca River headwaters is core koala habitat and Forestry Corporation’s logging operations in the area need to be immediately suspended until a proper assessment of the local koala population can be conducted,” Greens MP Dawn Walker said.

Rural Australians for Refugees Report

Roadside demonstration report

Last Thursday’s demo started well, with lots of support from passing motorists, but sadly, the skies became blacker by the minute and after three quarters of an hour, the heavens opened! Being fair-weather demonstrators, we had to beat a hasty retreat. However, that was not before a delightful young person came running from the Big Banana cafe carrying bottles of water for each of us. She just wanted to say thank you to us for our efforts and to express her solidarity with our cause, before rushing back to her work. How wonderful is that?
Our next roadside demonstration will take place on Thursday 18th May from 3.00 pm until 4.30 pm in Nambucca Heads. You will find us in the usual spot beside the Pacific Highway, adjacent to the Plaza shopping centre. Let’s hope that the sun shines!

Pics from Nambucca Heads March in March, March 25th, 2017

Residents either concerned or plainly furious about current political policies marched on March 25th. After displaying their various signage on the Pacific Highway residents marched from The Plaza shopping centre to Bellwood Park to hear the speakers. A selection of banner messages included:

No cuts to pensions

Justice for refugees

No coal seam gas

It is lawful to seek asylum

Farms not Coal

Climate action now

Go renewable energy - Stop Adani

Whose version of free speech are we having today?

Our society needs a healthy environment, a just society and a fair economy.

Will the issues be different when we march in 2018?
Try to attend the 2018 march. Will the issues have changed?

People Before Pokies: Revealing the true cost to our local communities

Did you see the story in today's Sydney Morning Herald revealing the NSW community lost a staggering $5.4 billion last year on poker machines in local clubs?

The Greens uncovered the clubs' big dirty secret by purchasing Government data showing exactly how much money is gambled and lost on the pokies in clubs across the state.

Do you want to know how much money pokies in clubs are ripping out of your local community?

Macksville-Nambucca Hospital: Questions

The Greens have been advocating for better health services for years.
Your family deserves the best health service.

How long before a new Macksville-Nambucca hospital is built and operating on a new site?

What extra support (staff, funds etc) will be provided to support staff operating under totally inadequate conditions in the current hospital? Keep staff safe now. Keep patients safe now, not in ten years time.

Reviews have previously found the current hospital could not be updated because of lack of space. Why was this information ignored by the local politicians in power and why were plans announced to update the hospital? Was it a ploy to delay the funding of a new hospital?

How many meetings will it take?
Will a new hospital be privatised? The Port Macquarie hospital was privatised but failed so badly the NSW government had to buy it back. Locals residents in the Nambucca Valley deserve a public hospital with 100% public services. Why not contact your local politicians with these questions?
